Check for numbers confined to a single column or row in a square. Check for new cells that contain one possible number. Filling cells with potential numbers lets you see each possibility for a square. Right angles give you a lot of information regarding the empty columns and rows in the cell they’re in, which can help you cancel out incorrect candidates in the adjacent cells. The second way is the way I use, which is to tear the paper along the folds. One way is to use scissors, which I feel makes it harder to get a straight cut out of the paper. After you have both papers divided into 4 equal segments, we are ready to start cutting. Just be aware that battery operated fairy lights usually only last 3-4 days if the lights are left on all the time, so you could also consider this longer strand that plugs in.For this step, I decided to combine the cutting step with the making squares step because they are one in the same, so there will be two videos this time. Or you could punch small holes and string the stars along a strand of fairy lights, like these battery operated lights from Amazon. If you’d like to turn your stars into a garland, I’d recommend using a needle and thread to string them together. The stars are so lightweight that they can easily be hung with thread. Alternately, you can use a needle and thread to make a loop without leaving a visible hole at all. A small hole made with a small hole punch ( like this one from Amazon) looks better on the stars than a standard size hole punch, but either would work. If you’d like to turn your folded stars into ornaments, you will also need a hole punch and twine. How to Make a Pentagon from a Square additional Supplies to Turn Stars into Ornaments If you prefer not to use my templates, you can find tutorials online that teach you how to cut a pentagon from any square sheet of paper, like this one: Click below to download the templates, and print them at 100% or full size. Printing the templates onto cardstock is a good idea so your tempates will be sturdy and reusable. You can print the templates, cut them out, and trace them on the back of the paper you’ll fold into a star. To make it easy to get a pentagon shape, I’ve created two printable templates for you. Origami paper would also be an option.īefore you can begin folding your star, you need to cut your paper into a perfect pentagon. I tried making stars out of lots of different patterned papers and I found that I preferred the ones that have a fairly uniform background (like the sheet music paper in the first photo of the post). Cardstock will not work because it’s just too heavy and stiff to perform well with all the folding. Normal copy weight paper–or just slightly heavier printed scrapbook paper–works very well. You really only need two supplies to make an origami star: a piece of paper and a pair of scissors (or paper trimmer). Your first star might take you about 15 minutes to make, but once you get the folding process down you can easily complete one in five minutes. I have a instructional video for you today that walks you through each of the five steps to folding a paper star. Depending on the paper you make them out of, these would be pretty cool for the Fourth of July as well! The little paper stars look great on your Christmas tree, and are also really nice strung up as a garland. They only take 5 steps to make and the finished stars make great DIY Christmas decorations!įor more easy origami tutorials, click here. That’s why I like simple origami projects that I can master quickly, like these origami stars. Origami is basically magic, right? Taking a flat piece of paper and turning it into something else entirely is pretty cool! But it can also be intimidating, and I rarely have the patience to work through long instructions. In today’s post: Learn how to fold a pointed origami star – it only takes five simple steps. Unlike synchronous stability 5, 21, which is useful for systematic evaluations but which does not demonstrate how a system would perform as an independent frequency standard, a self-comparison reproduces the short-term stability of an independent clock. A self-comparison approach compares two independent frequency locks operating on alternate experimental cycles 22. Both the quantum projection noise and the Dick effect have been confirmed to be correctly determined with a self-comparison, which agrees with the measurement from a two-clock comparison 21. With long-term drift under control at the low 10 −18 level, we can obtain a complete characterization of the clock stability with short-term stability measurements. Furthermore, stability data taken over the course of a month was robust and repeatable. We have demonstrated that after careful control of systematic effects, residual drifts did not affect clock stability at 2 × 10 −18 after thousands of seconds of averaging time 1. At long averaging times, the only mechanism that can limit the stability is drifting systematic shifts. Our clock stability at short averaging times is limited by the Dick effect 19-aliased high-frequency noise of the clock laser-that surpasses quantum projection noise 20 with 2,000 atoms. This corresponds to a gravitational redshift for a height change of 2 cm on Earth. With these developments, we achieve an overall systematic uncertainty of 2.1 × 10 −18, which is more than a threefold improvement over the previous best atomic clock 1. Here we describe a set of innovations implemented to improve the accuracy of the 87Sr clock: an optical lattice with no measurable ac Stark shift at 1 × 10 −18, blackbody radiation (BBR) thermometry with millikelvin level accuracy, atomic structure measurements that characterize the atomic response to BBR and active servo stabilization of electric and magnetic fields. In this work, we use an ultrastable laser with 10 s coherence time, referenced at 60% duty cycle to thousands of strontium atoms in an optical lattice, to achieve a record fractional frequency stability of 2.2 × 10 −16 at 1 s.īetter clock stability allows for faster evaluations of systematic uncertainties and enables the discovery of new physical effects 18. Clock stability can be extended from seconds to hours by referencing the ultrastable laser to a high-quality-factor optical transition of an atom 17. In an optical atomic clock, short-term stability originates from an ultrastable laser that serves as a local oscillator. The continued advances in clock stability and accuracy go hand in hand. Techniques developed for optical atomic clocks, such as advanced laser stabilization 13, 14, coherent manipulation of atoms 15 and novel atom trapping schemes 16, have given rise to new research opportunities in quantum physics. The pursuit of better atomic clocks has also had strong impact on many fundamental research areas, providing improved quantum state control 6, 7, deeper insights in quantum science 8, 9, tighter limits on fundamental constant variation 10, 11 and enhanced sensitivity for tests of relativity 12. Precise and accurate optical atomic clocks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 have the potential to transform global timekeeping, enabling orders-of-magnitude improvements in measurement precision and sensor resolution for a wide range of scientific and technological applications. All too often, app-based platforms just make it easier for companies to skirt regulations and realize profits. In the US, where social welfare and public goods are, at best, neglected, there’s little reason to think the launch of super apps would go any differently. The sleek integration of various apps into a larger ecosystem may provide convenience, but these are still apps concerned with extracting as much as they can out of each one of us either by labor exploitation or endless commodification. This has led to the explosive growth of digital infrastructure focused largely on government and corporate surveillance, social control, and the creation of new markets. In China, Tencent’s WeChat started as an instant messaging chat but eventually grew to include food delivery, utility payments, social media, banking, urban transit, health care appointments, air travel, biometrics, news, and more. Looking overseas, it’s easy to see how super apps could give tech companies further grounds to take advantage of existing structural holes. And for consumers, one application with a core function brings together a diverse array of services such as calling a cab, investing money, or even making a quick buck. For some tech firms like Microsoft, super apps may provide an opportunity to break the hold of more established monopolies like Apple or Google. Still, if you ignore this reality, you can understand some of the super app hype. These processes and rationalizations often result in American technologies that can be deployed to augment racial discrimination, corporate and government surveillance, social control, worker immiseration, and above all else, profit maximization-an inconvenient fact that doesn’t matter until it does. And yet, each sermon by a patriotic tech executive preaching the gospel of techno-nationalism (we can’t trust anyone but ourselves to build X or Y tech), each blog post by a doe-eyed venture capitalist about the threats of “Chinese AI”, makes it that much easier to secure contracts with police departments and militaries and government agencies, to rationalize self-regulation here or abroad in the name of outpacing China, and to reframe the ongoing privatization of state infrastructure and public life with sleek, dynamic digitization. But the realities of our tech ecosystem-in which the largest players seem committed to surveillance, labor exploitation, weaponizing tech, algorithmic discrimination, and privatizing every part of the public sphere in the name of profit-indicate that a new super app might not be such a great idea.Īt the moment, the US tech sector is all too eager to play up fears about an impending Cold War 2.0 with China, and snuffing out the competition has long been one of Silicon Valley’s favorite plays. Recently, Elon Musk told X employees that he wants the platform to become a WeChat-style super app, a one-stop shop for social media, communication, travel, on-demand labor, payments, and more. You'll need to find water, shelter, fire, and tools. You must depend on your instincts to survive, scavenging or hunting for food. There is only cold, hunger, dehydration, fatigue, and the constant threat of potentially hostile wildlife. There are no objectives or tutorials popping up telling you what to do. There is no hand holding in Survival mode. There will be time for maps and guides later, but ask any veteran player of The Long Dark, and they will tell you about how they wish they could go back and experience it for the first time all over again.Įven if you start on an easier difficulty, expect to die frequently at first. Being lost in the frozen Canadian wilderness is one of those rare gaming moments you won’t soon forget. The latter is suggested if you’re playing for the first time. Once the game settings have been locked in, you’ll either be dropped into a random spawn on a map you choose, or a random spawn on a random map. Each custom configuration can then be shared with other players through a unique code that’s generated. This includes a growing list of accessibility settings. Whether it’s worse weather, less loot, or removing food poisoning, almost every setting can be tweaked to give you an experience tailored to your tastes. Difficulties include Pilgrim (easy), Voyager (normal), Stalker (hard), Interloper (ouch), and Custom in case you want to curate your own experience. A starting map can be selected, or one can be picked randomly. The bread and butter of The Long Dark is its Survival mode. First steps I sat in this car for hours waiting for that bear to bleed out. Over the years, The Long Dark has trickled out onto more platforms, including the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Since 2017, The Long Dark has seen updates to not only Survival mode, but also a third and fourth episode of the story, as well as various Challenges and special in-game events for players to dig into. In 2017 it left early access with the release of Wintermute, a story mode with two episodes out of a planned five. In the Quiet Apocalypse, it’s you against the elements, and the only goal is to see how long you can deny the inevitable.ĭeveloped by Hinterland Studio Inc., The Long Dark was originally released on Steam in 2014 as an early-access title that featured a Survival mode. There are usually dinosaurs, monsters, or giant spiders tacked onto forgiving survival mechanics. These are all common in survival games, but few make survival the central experience. Maybe you need certain clothes to stay warm or protect yourself from the elements. You eat or drink to fill a hunger or thirst bar. Buy the larger one, you’ll thank us later. Many games include survival elements. That’s a problem if you’re thinking one console is going to keep all of your offspring entertained before you go crazy. The Switch Lite also doesn’t have detachable Joy-Cons, so you’ll have to buy additional controllers to play anything that has a party mode with multiple players. See, the Switch Lite only works in handheld mode, you can’t dock it and presumably, it won’t output video over the USB-C port that it charges from. That’s the $300 version, in case you were wondering. The main difference is if you want to use your Nintendo Switch hooked up to your TV, you need to buy the full-sized Nintendo Switch. Short answer: It depends on if you want to use it docked So… what’s actually different? Is there any point buying the more expensive Nintendo Switch if you plan on using it in handheld mode anyway? So, which Nintendo Switch should I buy? The rest of the time, there is a choice to be made between the normal Nintendo Switch with its removable Joy-Cons, and the Switch Lite, which is a sealed unit.īoth consoles have the same Nvidia Tegra X1 powering them, both have 1,280 x 720 resolution screens, and both run the same games. If you’re trying to source a Nintendo Switch to stave off cabin fever, your already-small choice will often be made for you by what’s in stock. *⁷Pentium III emulation includes variants. *⁵Pentium II emulation includes variants.
